Do transitional or traumatic events affect IDI results?

In most cases, transitional or traumatic events do not directly impact how individuals make sense of or interpret cultural differences—the primary focus of the IDI. Validation studies show that a person’s mindset toward cultural differences tends to remain stable across a wide range of life experiences and challenges.

The degree to which a specific event is experienced as transitional or traumatic is highly individual. Factors such as the event’s direct impact on a person’s work or personal life, and whether they or someone close to them have been affected, all play a role in how the event is experienced and whether it might influence IDI results,

Here are some examples of events that could be regarded as traumatic and how they may or may not affect IDI results:

The COVID-19 pandemic: While the pandemic may impact thinking and behavior in regards to safety, in the vast number of cases this impact does not significantly change our mindset towards cultural differences. However, if a respondent feels their thinking and behavior has changed specifically towards how they engage cultural differences, you may wish to ask them to reflect on how this transitional situation may impact how they make sense of cultural differences and commonalities as identified by their IDI results.

Regarding events around racial injustice: Due to the cultural nature of these events for many, it is possible that these events may be considered transitional or traumatic, and may be reflected in IDI results. That being said, an individual's results will still be valid of their current experience, and will present an accurate portrait of how the person is making sense of cultural differences.

Is there an impact on the Debrief Process?

The influence of current events on the IDI Debrief process depends on the individual respondent. As a Qualified Administrator (QA), avoid assuming if or how someone is affected. If a respondent brings up current events as significant for them, support them in exploring whether and how these experiences may be shaping their IDI results or development goals.

While it is possible for current events to affect IDI results, IDI, LLC does not recommend delaying administration of the IDI. In fact, engaging with the IDI during times of significant change can be especially valuable. Continue to use the IDI as usual, but be prepared to make space for conversations about how ongoing events may be affecting respondents and how this might be reflected in their profile results.
